A New Roof, Done Once and Done Properly
A re-roof means stripping the old covering down to the rafters and rebuilding it: new breathable membrane, new treated battens, tiles or slates relaid or replaced, and new ridges, verges and leadwork. It resets the clock on your roof for decades.
It's the right choice when repairs are no longer cost-effective, widespread slipping, perished felt, rotten battens or a roof that has simply reached the end of its life.
Because a re-roof is a major investment, the quality of the hidden layers matters as much as the tiles you see. Scott works on every re-roof himself, so you know who is responsible for every layer.
Who This Is For
- Roofs needing repeated repairs year after year
- Homes with widespread slipped tiles or nail sickness
- Old bitumen felt that has perished or torn
- Owners renovating or extending who want a uniform roof
- Homes changing from concrete tiles to slate or clay
What happens if you wait
Patching a Worn-Out Roof Costs More in the End
Once the underlay and fixings are failing everywhere, each repair just moves the leak. The cumulative bill, plus internal damage, often exceeds the cost of a re-roof.
Repeat call-outs
Fix one area and another fails. Money goes on repairs that never solve the underlying problem.
Structural rot
Prolonged leaks reach rafters and wall plates, adding carpentry costs to the eventual re-roof.
Damage inside
Ruined insulation, stained ceilings and damp can make rooms unusable.
Common Mistakes Homeowners Make
- Choosing the cheapest quote without knowing what's included
- Reusing old battens or felt to save money
- Overlaying new tiles without checking the structure
- Forgetting ventilation, leading to condensation
- Accepting a day-rate price instead of a fixed price
- Leaving leadwork and chimneys out of the job

In detail
Re-Roofing Explained
What goes into a re-roof and the choices you'll make along the way.
Material options
Most re-roofs in the area use concrete interlocking tiles, clay plain tiles or natural slate. Concrete is economical and durable; clay gives a traditional look; natural slate offers outstanding longevity and character. Some homeowners switch materials during a re-roof: Scott will advise on weight, pitch and appearance before you decide.
What gets replaced
A proper re-roof includes new breathable membrane, new treated battens, new or reclaimed tiles or slates, new ridge and hip tiles (often dry-fixed), new verges, and renewed lead flashings, valleys and soakers. Damaged timbers found during the strip are reported and repaired with your agreement.
Roofline at the same time
With access already in place, it often makes sense to replace fascias, soffits and gutters with UPVC during a re-roof. Doing it together saves a separate visit and gives a complete, matching finish.
Weather and timing
The roof is opened in sections and protected at the end of each day, so your home stays watertight throughout. Timescales depend on the size and complexity of the roof and are confirmed with your quote.
Homes we re-roof
Houses, bungalows, extensions and garages with pitched roofs across Bracknell, Wokingham, Camberley, Sandhurst and the wider area. SLW Roofing doesn't install flat roofs.
Signs it's time to re-roof
You may need a re-roof if tiles are slipping across several slopes, the felt is torn and brittle when viewed from the loft, battens are soft or broken, or you've had several repairs in the last few years. A sagging roof line can indicate structural issues that should be checked during a strip.
Age alone isn't a reason to replace a roof. Scott will only recommend a re-roof when the evidence shows repairs no longer make financial sense.
Comparing re-roofing quotes
When comparing quotes, check whether each includes new membrane, new battens, ridges, verges, leadwork, removal of waste and any scaffolding. A lower price often leaves something out. Your SLW Roofing quote lists what's included and is fixed, so the price won't change once the work begins.
Ask who will actually do the work. With SLW Roofing, it's Scott, the same person who surveyed your roof and gave you the price.
Dry-fix ridges and verges
Modern re-roofs commonly use dry-fix ridge and verge systems. They are mechanically fixed rather than relying on mortar, which reduces future maintenance and resists wind uplift. They suit most tile types and are worth considering on any full replacement.
Preparing for your re-roof
Before work starts, it helps to clear the loft of anything valuable or fragile, as some dust and debris can fall through during stripping. Let neighbours know about scaffolding and parking, and agree where waste will be stored. Scott will talk you through each stage, so you know what to expect day by day and when the roof will be opened and closed.
Once complete, you'll be walked through the finished roof and given details of your 10-year guarantee.
Choosing a Roofer for Re-Roofs in Bracknell
Whoever you choose for re-roofs, ask four questions before you agree to anything: who will actually do the work, is the price fixed or a day rate, what guarantee is offered, and is the roofer insured. The answers tell you more than any advert.
With SLW Roofing, Scott Workman is on every job himself. He started roofing at 14 and has 25 years' experience on the roofs of Berkshire and Surrey. The person who inspects your roof is the person responsible for fixing it, so nothing is lost between a salesman's promise and the work on your roof.
Every quote is free and every price is fixed. Once you've agreed it, it doesn't change because a job took longer than expected. If something unexpected is found, such as rotten timber hidden under tiles, you'll be shown it and asked before any extra work goes ahead.
All work comes with a 10-year guarantee. SLW Roofing holds £1 million public liability insurance and Scott is CSCS registered, a recognised site safety credential. Emergency repairs are available 7 days a week, and standard hours run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm.
SLW Roofing is based in Bracknell and covers homes up to 30 miles away, including Wokingham, Ascot, Sandhurst, Crowthorne, Camberley, Reading, Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough, Staines-upon-Thames, Woking, Guildford and Farnham. Questions
Re-Roofs FAQs
How much does a re-roof cost in Bracknell?+
It depends on roof size, materials, access and chimneys. Scott surveys for free and gives a fixed price, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.
How long does a re-roof take?+
It varies with the size and complexity of the roof. You'll be given a realistic timeline with your quote.
Can I stay in my home during the work?+
Yes. The roof is opened in sections and made watertight at the end of each day.
Do I need planning permission?+
Like-for-like re-roofing usually doesn't, but listed buildings and conservation areas can have restrictions. Check with your local council if that applies.
Can I reuse my existing tiles?+
Sometimes. Sound slates and clay tiles can often be reused; worn concrete tiles usually aren't worth relaying.
Is the new roof guaranteed?+
Yes. All work carries a 10-year guarantee.
Will you replace the guttering too?+
If you'd like. UPVC gutters, fascias and soffits can be fitted at the same time.
Do you re-roof outside Bracknell?+
Yes, up to 30 miles away, including Reading, Woking, Guildford, Windsor and Farnham.
